  1. What Is Skills?

A skill is a learned ability to perform an action with determined results with good execution often within a given amount of time, energy, or both. Skills can often be divided into domain-general and domain-specific skills.


2. How Many Types of skills-

There are seven types of skills.


1. Hard skills-

“Your hard skills help you acquire employment and your soft skills help you ensure your employability. Hence, integrate hard and soft skills to fast-track your career.”

Hard skills are specific abilities, or capabilities, that an individual can possess and demonstrate in a measured way. 

 

What are Hard skills examples?

 

            • Technical skills.
            • Computer skills.
            • Microsoft Office skills.
            • Analytical skills.
            • Marketing skills.
            • Presentation skills.
            • Management skills.
            • Project management skills.




2. Generic skills-Holistic Competencies.

Generic skills, also referred to as 'graduate attributes' or 'twentieth-century skills', refer to lifelong skills students need to learn that apply to broad aspects of life, and are not specific to a particular class or subject.


A few examples of generic skills include- written communication, teamwork, digital literacy, problem-solving, and information literacy.

3. Labour Skills-




Skilled labour refers to highly trained, educated, or experienced segments of the workforce that can complete more complex mental or physical tasks on the job.


Here are several examples of general labour skills:
  • Tool operation. Many general labour jobs require tools, such as hammers, drills, handsaws and staple guns.
  • Unloading and loading.
  • Following instructions. 
  • Forklift operation. 
  • Snow removal. 
  • Demolition. 
  • Debris removal. 
  • Communication.

4. Life Skills-

Life skills are adaptive and positive behaviour abilities that enable humans to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of life. This concept is also termed psychosocial competency.




5. People Skills-

The single greatest people skill is a highly-developed and authentic interest in the other person.” 

People skills are patterns of behaviour and behavioural interactions. Among people, it is an umbrella term for skills under three related sets of abilities: personal effectiveness, interaction skills, and intercession skills.

People skills, sometimes called interpersonal skills, are defined as the skills used to communicate and interact with others effectively. People skills include active listening, the ability to mediate disputes, and being tolerant of differences in a casual or business setting.




            Examples of people skills-

          • Effective communication.

          • Teamwork.
          • Collaboration.
          • Conflict resolution.
          • Persuasion and influencing skills.
          • Reliability.
          • Respectfulness.


6. Social Skills-

Social skills are the skills we use every day to interact and communicate with others. They include verbal and non-verbal communication, such as speech, gesture, facial expression and body language.



Example of social skills-

    • Observation.
    • Active listening.
    • Conflict resolution.
    • Empathy.
    • Written and verbal communication.
    • Mirroring.
    • Cooperation.
    • Relationship management.


7. Soft Skills-

Soft skill is a personal attribute that supports situational awareness and enhances an individual's ability to get a job done. The term soft skills are often used as a synonym for people skills or emotional intelligence.
