Nazrul was born in the village of Churulia near Asansol, Bengal Presidency, British India (now West Bengal) on 25 May 1899. His father's name was Amiruddin and his mother's name was Hazi Sowrabai. Nazrul studied in a madrasa before he attended college at the University of Calcutta.

In 1913, he went to Calcutta (now Kolkata) and started working as a clerk in the Office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police.
