Mission: Impossible is a popular action spy film franchise that began in 1996. It features a team of secret agents known as the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) tasked with carrying out dangerous and covert missions to protect national security and prevent international crises. The franchise is known for its high-octane action sequences, intricate plots, and the iconic character Ethan Hunt, portrayed by Tom Cruise.

Each Mission: Impossible film usually involves Ethan Hunt and his team going up against formidable adversaries, navigating complex webs of deception and espionage, and utilizing cutting-edge technology to achieve their objectives. The movies often feature daring stunts by Tom Cruise, contributing to the franchise's reputation for intense and thrilling action.

As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, there have been seven Mission: Impossible films released:

Mission: Impossible (1996): Directed by Brian De Palma, it serves as the first instalment of the franchise and establishes the core characters and premise. Ethan Hunt must clear his name after he is framed for the deaths of his IMF team members.

Mission: Impossible 2 (2000): Directed by John Woo, this film sees Ethan Hunt facing off against a former IMF agent turned rogue, who plans to unleash a deadly virus.

Mission: Impossible III (2006): Directed by J.J. Abrams, it introduces Philip Seymour Hoffman as a ruthless arms dealer. Ethan Hunt must rescue his kidnapped wife while trying to stop the villain's plans.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011): Directed by Brad Bird, this film involves Ethan Hunt and his team being disavowed after a terrorist attack and having to stop a nuclear threat known as "The Cobalt."

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015): Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, it features Ethan Hunt and his team going up against a shadowy organization known as "The Syndicate."

Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018): Also directed by Christopher McQuarrie, this film continues the story of The Syndicate and introduces a new threat known as "The Apostles."

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning (2023): As of my knowledge cutoff, no information is available about this film as it is beyond my knowledge cutoff date.

Please note that the information provided above is accurate up to my last update in September 2021, and there may have been new developments or releases in the Mission: Impossible franchise since then.
